Overview of energy education at the RUG

The University of Groningen offers a wide variety of education in energy and sustainability issues in different academic disciplines such as natural sciences, law, psychology, economics, spatial and environmental planning and international relations. At bachelor level the University of Groningen offers a number of energy tracks in bachelor programs and a wide variety of energy related courses.

Energy Courses at Bachelor level

The University of Groningen offers a great variety of bachelor courses on energy and energy related topics. To give you some idea:

    • The Faculty of Science and Engineering offers more than 30 courses on energy (related) issues in the Bachelor programme, for example on geo-energy or on modelling energy.
    • The Faculty of Arts offers energy courses in the context of international relations.
    • The Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences has courses on the social influence of sustainability and consumer psychology.
    • The Faculty of Economics and Business students can follow courses on environmental and resources economics and on energy markets.
    • The Faculty of Law offers course on energy law and energy contracting.
    • The Faculty of Spatial Sciences students can focus on energy by taking courses about environmental planning and social impact assessment.

FEB Energy Focus Area

The energy sector is changing dramatically. Conventional power firms are reporting financial losses, while consumers are facing lower electricity prices but, at the same time, higher energy taxes in order to finance the subsidies for renewables.
Completing the FEB Energy Focus Area gives you specialised knowledge to help you successfully navigate the economic, business and financial challenges facing the energy sector.

Thesis, internship and learning activities

In addition to the regular courses, the University of Groningen offers a number of other possibilities to take up energy in a degree, for example by doing the thesis and internship on energy. Students are also encouraged to follow learning activities offered by Energy Academy/New Energy Coalition. By following these students can obtain a Learning Activities Certificate (proof of participation) and/or the Energy Academy Certificate.

PhD training and education

At the University of Groningen, a considerable number of PhDs is engaged in research in the field of energy and sustainability. For their training and education, PhDs generally participate in the Graduate Schools and Research Institute in their discipline. Furthermore the University of Groningen organizes the Energy Summer School every year. The 2017 edition of GES ‘Yes in My Back Yard’ takes an interdisciplinary approach to the societal and technological dimensions of the energy transition.

Professional level

The Groningen Centre of Energy Law (GCEL), Faculty of Law, offers the course North Sea Energy Law and the course Energierecht op Locatie (in Dutch) for post academic professionals. The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) offers the 6-day executive course The Community-Centric Energy Transition.

Pre-academic level

The University of Groningen provides educational opportunities at pre academic level such as the Your Energy of Tomorrow Truck and the Wubbo Ockels Award for the school that is most devoted to sustainability.

Honours College

The Honours College offers talented, motivated students the opportunity to challenge themselves by supplement an additional programme in addition to their regular degree programme. For an energy track in the Honours bachelor programme, students can attend energy related courses at different faculties. For tracks in the master program there are various opportunities, including master classes, and special courses.

University College Groningen

Energy is also one of the three major themes of University College Groningen. The Liberal Arts and Sciences programme at University College Groningen educates ambitious and multi-talented students to develop creative and innovative solutions for the challenges of society.
