Time: 9:45 – 14:00
Location: Energy Academy Europe, Zernike Campus (Nijenborgh 6)

Low oil prices, energy security, climate change, air pollution, food and water shortages: many of these challenges relate to the way our energy system is designed. You may wonder, how should these structural challenges be addressed? According to Quintel Intelligence, coping with these complex problems requires a holistic approach.

Masterclass programme:

  • Presentation and interactive demonstration by Alexander Wirtz, Quintel Intelligence
  • Lunch
  • Interactive workshop

During the masterclass Alexander Wirtz will help you explore the energy system of the Netherlands. He will reflect on the nexus between energy technology, energy security, legislation, social change and market design. Following his interactive presentation, the participating students will be divided into interdisciplinary groups. Using the Energy Transition Model (ETM), you will develop different scenarios for the future in an attempt to solve current challenges associated with the energy transition. Finally, we will use your ideas and lessons learnt as input for a discussion.

Energy Transition Model
The Energy Transition Model is an independent, comprehensive and fact-based energy model that is used by governments, corporations and NGOs for training purposes, decision making and to facilitate discussions. The model is a free, open source, online tool for future energy scenario analysis. Instead of trying to predict the future, the ETM is meant to help users explore it and get a grip on important future developments.
Do not miss out on this unique opportunity and register today – calling students from all study fields, to participate and contribute!

Alexander Wirtz is managing partner and co-founder of Quintel Intelligence. He holds a Master’s degree in Physical Chemistry from University of Amsterdam, and a PhD in Physics from University of Leiden. Quintel Intelligence is a privately held company that aims to provide factual and objective information on strategic energy issues. Quintel’s mission is to accelerate the energy transition by improving everyone’s understanding of energy and energy systems.

It is defined as an Energy Learning Activity for students of the Hanze UAS and the University of Groningen. Students are invited to attend as many Energy Learning Activities as they want, at all stages of their education.
Energy Learning Activities are part of the Energy Academy Europe Certificate. If students follow 10 Energy Learning Activities and also complete 30 ECTS in energy courses at Hanze UAS or the University of Groningen, they are eligible for obtaining the EAE Certificate.

This masterclass is designed by Energy Academy Europe for RUG and Hanze students of all fields with an interest in energy and the energy transition. Dialogue and the exchange of ideas are at the heart of the Energy Academy Masterclass. Since there are limited places available, and the multidisciplinary outlook in the topic we will confirm your qualification upon selection in due course.
