The city of Groningen aims to become energy neutral by the year 2035. How will they reach that goal? What does it take? How can you, as a Groningen-citizen, be involved in the energy transition? Find answers to these and other relevant questions during our next lecture with Wouter van Bolhuis, Program Manager Energy at Gemeente Groningen and Dr. Faris Nizamic, CEO of the Sustainable Buildings company and award winning post-doc researcher at Groningen University.
Gemeente Groningen has been working on the “Masterplan Groningen Energieneutraal” since 2012. Now, in their second three-year-plan that will run from 2015 until 2018, Program Manager Wouter van Bolhuis will touch on the sustainability changes the city has in store for the upcoming years. Also, he will reflect on the steps that have been made sofar and the topics they are working now. As this affects everyone who lives in the city, it will be interesting to hear what changes we will face on the way to energy neutrality.
Dr. Faris Nizamic will join the Energy Lecture to reflect on the contribution that his company “Sustainable Buildings” can offer to making Groningen energy neutral. The company has won the university’s “Green Mind Award” in 2012 and 2014. Dr. Nizamic’s idea is to improve energy management in buildings by connecting them to an IT system. Since buildings are responsible for 40% of energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions, this can lead to huge benefits. He will share experiences from applying it to University building “Bernoulliborg”, and other future steps of the company.
So whether you are a Groningen citizen interested in what sustainable initiatives are evolving around you, a student interested in sustainable start-ups or you just want to learn more about the energy transition, we recommend you attend this lecture: get inspired, ask questions and discuss issues during this interactive session.
Wouter van Bolhuis is Program Manager Energy of the department of economic affairs of Gemeente Groningen. Wouter received his education at University of Groningen (Faculty of Spatial Sciences). The ultimate goal of the project led by Wouter is to turn Groningen into an energy neutral city by 2035 with the use of renewable energy sources, as well as implementation of energy saving measures.
Dr Faris Nizamic is the CEO of Sustainable Buildings company and a part-time Post Doc researcher at the University of Groningen. Faris holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Groningen. He is an author of a book “A Smart Energy System for Sustainable Buildings: The Case of the Bernoulliborg” published by Amazon. During his PhD, together with his PhD fellows, he won many awards, some of which are Green Mind Awards, Pioneers Community Award and Startup Fast track.
It is defined as an Energy Learning Activity for students of the Hanze UAS and the University of Groningen. Students are invited to attend as many Energy Learning Activities as they want, at all stages of their education.
Energy Learning Activities are part of the Energy Academy Europe Certificate. If students follow 10 Energy Learning Activities and also complete 30 ECTS in energy courses at Hanze UAS or the University of Groningen, they are eligible for obtaining the EAE Certificate.
